Designed in London. Engineered in Cranfield. Built in Sunderland. Over 11.9 million cars and counting.
For nearly four decades, Nissan has been woven into the fabric of British automotive manufacturing. Our Sunderland plant is one of the most productive car factories in Europe, and our design studio in Paddington shapes the future of mobility. This is the story of a global brand with deep British roots and an unwavering commitment to innovation, sustainability, and the communities we serve.
When Nissan opened its Sunderland plant in 1986, it marked the beginning of a remarkable partnership between Japanese engineering philosophy and British manufacturing excellence. Today, the plant employs over 6,000 people directly and supports more than 30,000 jobs in the wider UK supply chain. It has produced iconic models from the Bluebird to the Qashqai, the Juke to the LEAF. In 2021, Nissan announced a 1 billion pound investment in the EV36Zero hub, a groundbreaking ecosystem combining electric vehicle production, battery manufacturing through Envision AESC, and renewable energy generation through a new solar farm. This investment cements Sunderland as a global centre for electric vehicle innovation and ensures Nissan's British future for generations to come.
Nissan Design Europe, based in Paddington, London, is where some of the world's most exciting cars take shape. Our team of international designers draw inspiration from British culture, architecture, and lifestyle to create vehicles that resonate with European drivers. The studio was instrumental in shaping the Qashqai, the car that defined the crossover segment, and the Juke, which brought bold, unconventional design to the compact class. Today, the team is focused on the next generation of electric vehicles, exploring how sustainable materials, minimalist interiors, and expressive exterior forms can create a new design language for the age of electrification. Every line, curve, and surface is considered with the driver in mind.
